Thrombosis and the application of Herzog PRO Sport Compression Socks

According to the Thrombosis Foundation, one in four people die from thrombosis. The Herzog PRO Compression Socks have a medical quality mark and help with the recovery of thrombosis in the lower leg. The Herzog Support Compression Socks work preventively to prevent thrombosis in the lower legs. Harald Herzog, founder of compression in the sports world, takes you through the medical application of Herzog Compression Socks.

What is thrombosis?

Thrombosis is a clot in the bloodstream, often in the lower leg. This accumulation and clumping of solid particles in the blood can easily close a blood vessel in your leg.

You understand the consequence: the blood can no longer flow back to the heart and your lower leg becomes red, painful and swollen. If such a plug comes loose and is carried into the blood stream and ends up in a smaller vessel in, for example, the lungs or the brain, the underlying tissue will no longer be supplied with blood due to complete blockage, with all the consequences that entails.

We will not discuss the development of a thrombosis and the underlying causes here. The chance that you will contract a thrombosis in your leg (a 'thrombosis leg') increases the less you exercise, for example when your leg is in a plaster cast, during your pregnancy or during long plane trips. In all these cases, the calf muscle pumping effect is absent or minimal. This animated video illustrates the calf muscle pump action with the flow of venous blood in a simplified manner.

How can you reduce the risk of thrombosis?

What can you do yourself to reduce the risk? Try to keep moving as much as possible. If you cannot walk, perhaps on a plane, then at least try to regularly write your name in the air with your toes, for example, or move your feet rhythmically by alternately moving your toes towards your knee and back again. Don't wait too long if you feel these symptoms and go to your doctor if your legs are painful, somewhat swollen and often red. The treatment often involves prescribing so-called blood thinners and you will also have to wear support socks for at least a year. Your doctor/thrombosis service will determine how long you should use the blood thinners.

It is important that you wear compression socks every day. The Herzog PRO Compression Socks officially meet all the conditions for a compression support sock (the 'TEK condition'). An advantage of the Herzog PRO Compression Socks compared to the 'regular support stocking' is the modern look and wearing comfort. Compared to other support socks, Herzog PRO Compression Socks provide optimal heat exchange due to the use of skin-friendly microfibers. Herzog socks have been specially developed from the medical world for sports use.

Thrombosis and the application of the Support Compression Socks

After the first two years in which wearing compression socks is mandatory, the patient is free to continue wearing compression socks or not. The general advice, however, is to do so, no longer the relatively high compression as during the first two years, but a slightly more moderate compression. Here we warmly recommend the Herzog Support Compression Socks as a guarantee to help prevent recurring complaints.

The Support Socks have a preventive effect after a thrombosis. In addition, these compression socks are suitable for daily use.

“During my time as a physiotherapist at NAC Breda, I recommended the PRO Compression Shorts from Herzog Medical to many players. These trousers are worn both preventively and curatively. Within football, the incidence of groin and hamstring injuries is high. With Herzog shorts you, as a physiotherapist, have an extra tool to properly manage these problems.”
