Early varicose veins do not always immediately present as clearly visible, thick veins. Often, the symptoms begin with a sensation in the legs. Many people recognize, for example:
- heavy or tired legs
- a pulling or aching sensation in the calves
- restless legs, especially in the evening
- slight swelling around the ankles or lower legs
- a tense feeling after prolonged standing or sitting
- itching or warmth around small visible veins
- legs that tire more quickly during walking or exercise
Initially, small blue or purple veins may also become visible. Sometimes, there's hardly anything to see, but the legs already feel different after exertion.
Symptoms often worsen in warm weather, after prolonged standing, prolonged sitting, and intense strain without sufficient recovery.
Many people find relief through movement, walking, or compression, as these support blood circulation.
As varicose veins develop further, the veins can become distinctly thicker and more tortuous. If you have doubts or increasing symptoms, it is advisable to have them assessed by a doctor or vascular specialist.
