MDR and compression: what does it mean?

Compression stockings may look alike, but they differ in fit, pressure, and application. At Herzog, you choose PRO Compression Stockings, developed using medical compression technology. With a sizing system that accounts for your specific legs.

What is MDR?

MDR stands for Medical Device Regulation: the European regulation for medical devices. It sets requirements for the safety, performance, and information regarding a product.

Our PRO Compression socks, tubes, and thigh supports are medical devices. This means we must substantiate their effectiveness for their intended use. We must also clearly explain how to use them.

You are therefore choosing compression with a defined medical application and corresponding substantiation.

What is the difference from regular compression socks?

The word ‘compression’ in itself does not indicate how much pressure a sock provides, how that pressure is distributed, or what the product is suitable for.

A sports compression sock is also not automatically a medical device. For medical compression stockings, European requirements for that medical application apply.

Therefore, when comparing, look beyond color and shoe size. Also pay attention to the intended use, the pressure, and the way you determine the correct size.

Compression that fits your legs

No two legs are the same. Your shoe size alone says little about the circumference of your ankle, the shape of your calf, or the length of your lower leg.

That is why Herzog uses multiple measurement points for its PRO Compression Socks. This allows us to select a size that takes your specific leg shape and leg length into account.

This is important: the right fit helps the sock provide the intended compression.

Graduated compression, from ankle to calf

The PRO Compression Socks have a graduated pressure profile. The pressure is highest around the ankle and decreases towards the knee. This helps support the return flow of blood from the legs.

That distribution of pressure and a proper fit go hand in hand. That is why we pay attention to both the compression and the measuring of your legs.

Medical background, developed for athletes

Herzog PRO Compression Stockings were developed from therapeutic elastic stockings. That medical background forms the basis of our compression technology for athletes.

Whether you exercise recreationally or at a high level: you want a stocking that fits well and is suitable for your goal. Our product information and compression specialists are here to help you with that.

What does the CE marking mean?

MDR is often referred to as a quality mark. Officially, it is European legislation. The CE marking indicates that a medical device complies with the applicable European requirements.
