The difference between support stockings and (sports) compression stockings

Many people use the terms support stockings and compression socks interchangeably. This often causes confusion, especially because many sports brands call their products "compression stockings," while the function and pressure ratings can be completely different. Time to clarify this topic.

What are support stockings?

In common parlance it is said that support stockings Therapeutic Elastic Stockings (TEK) are actually meant. These are medical elastic stockings used for various conditions, such as varicose veins or edema. TEK stockings are always available from one of the four official printing classes:

Compression class 1 (18–21 mmHg): light compression for preventive use, for example for tired legs or mild swelling.
Pressure class 2 (23–30 mmHg): compression for varicose veins, mild oedema complaints or after venous interventions.
Pressure class 3 (34–46 mmHg): strong compression in chronic venous insufficiency or more serious fluid retention (oedema).
Pressure class 4 (>49 mmHg): very strong compression, only on prescription for serious medical conditions.

The pressure class you receive is always determined by a doctor or specialist, depending on the condition and severity of the symptoms. A TEK stocking is therefore a medical device with a precisely defined pressure profile .

What are compression stockings?

Compression stockings are elastic socks that apply pressure to the lower leg to improve blood circulation and wick away moisture. The effectiveness of a compression stocking depends entirely on its pressure profile. Medical compression stockings (TEK stockings) have an officially defined pressure class and are measured at various points.

Application of compression stockings:

  • Reducing fluid retention (edema).
  • Support for varicose veins and reduced vascular function.
  • Preventing thrombosis when sitting or traveling for long periods of time.
  • Relieves heavy or tired legs.
  • Promoting recovery after medical interventions.

The main differences between support stockings and sports compression stockings

The term "compression socks" is also frequently used in the sports world, but that often says little about their actual effectiveness. Many sports compression socks lack a clear pressure profile, lack a medically defined pressure class, and are not measured. They usually use standard sizes (S/M/L), meaning pressure can vary significantly from person to person.

Genuine TEK stockings—such as Herzog Medical compression stockings—are measured at six points around the leg and have a precisely graduated medical pressure profile. Herzog stockings also fall into compression class 2 (highest in the range, almost pressure class 3) and are officially MDR-certified as a medical device.

More than 700,000 happy and satisfied Herzog users preceded you

84% experience fewer injuries • 78% indicate they recover faster • 71% wear the stockings preventively • 97% recommend the Herzog stockings

Medical precision

PRO Compression socks have:

  • Pressure class 2 (high in the range, almost class 3)
  • a medically accurate ascending pressure profile
  • dimensions based on six measuring points
  • an official MDR medical quality mark .

Perfect for sports performance

In addition to the medical pressure profile, Herzog socks are optimized for athletes:

  • optimal moisture and perspiration drainage
  • prevent blister formation
  • better muscle stabilization
  • postponement of acidification
  • faster recovery after training and competitions

This way you get the medical effect of TEK socks , but specifically designed for performance.

Frequently asked questions about support and (sports) compression stockings

Frequently asked questions about support stockings, compression stockings, and therapeutic elastic stockings (TEK). Read more about the differences, compression classes, and medical standards (MDR).

What are support stockings?

Compression stockings are elasticcompression stockingsThese exert gentle pressure on your lower legs. This light pressure stimulates the pumping action for improved blood circulation, which in turn helps remove waste products from your legs.

Therapeutic Elastic Stockings (TEK support stockings) are proven to support blood circulationand help with complaints such as:moisture retention, varicose veins, or in preventing fatigue.

01
What is the difference between medical compression stockings and regular support stockings for edema?

Medical compression stockings – such as those from Herzog – have compression pressure class 2, for helpful pressure distribution against edema complaints and areMDR approved.

They provide targeted support for fluid retention and stimulate blood circulation. Regular compression stockings often have lower, less targeted pressure and are more suitable for light support without a medical indication.

02
Are compression stockings reimbursed by health insurance?

Yes, therapeutic elastic stockings (TEK) in compression class 2 or higher are covered by the basic health insurance package. This basic package is the same for everyone in the Netherlands, but the terms and conditions and contracted suppliers vary by health insurer.

It is therefore important to check in advance:

  • whether your stockings fall within compression class 2, 3 or 4;
  • which provider your health insurer has contracted with;
  • and under what conditions compensation takes place.

NB:For reimbursement, you need a prescription from your doctor. For more information, see:Dutch Healthcare Institute
