First HYROX? Here's what you need to know before you start

You’ve signed up for your first HYROX. Exciting! And maybe by now you’re also thinking: what have I actually gotten myself into? You might be a decent runner, and you don’t shy away from a solid workout at the gym either. But HYROX combines the two in a way that truly puts your body to the test.

8 runs of 1 kilometer each. 8 workouts. And all the while, you’re just trying to stay on your feet.

Your first HYROX is a tough challenge, but with proper preparation, you can gradually get your body used to what is expected of you during a HYROX. What is the best way to prepare? And what should you keep in mind as a beginner?

From running to strength and back again

A HYROX is quite different from the workouts you might be used to. You run 1 kilometer, which is immediately followed by a fitness exercise. Think of sled pushes, sled pulls, burpees, rowing, farmer's carries, sandbag lunges, and wall balls.

The difficulty here doesn't necessarily lie in any one specific component. Your legs can probably handle that kilometer just fine, and that single sled push is usually manageable too. It becomes especially challenging when you have to do everything back-to-back. After a few rounds, your legs are fatigued, while another kilometer is always waiting for you.

That is why it is smart not to focus solely on either conditioning or strength during your preparation. The combination is exactly what is important. Alternate between running and strength training, and try to combine them in the same workout every once in a while. This teaches your body to continue delivering power even when you are already somewhat fatigued.

Your whole body is involved

During a HYROX, you use the muscles in your entire body. When running, your calves and lower legs are put under strain with every single step. After every kilometer, an intensive exercise follows, such as wall balls, lunges, or a sled pull.

Compression shorts can provide targeted support around the thighs and groin. Herzog PRO Sport Compression Shorts use a diminishing pressure gradient of 22 to 13 mmHg and help reduce muscle vibration during movement. This can be especially pleasant during explosive movements and the frequent switching between running and fitness exercises.

Your lower legs deserve attention, too. The Herzog PROCompression Socks offer targeted compression around the calves and lower leg and can therefore be a great addition during the running kilometers of a HYROX. Especially when you have to start running again immediately after a heavy exercise, your lower legs have to endure a great deal.

Which support feels best naturally differs from person to person. The most important thing is that you discover what works for you during your preparation.

Build up gradually and don't underestimate recovery

If you're enthusiastic about your first HYROX, you might want to train everything at once. However, it's wise to give yourself some time and not start off too hard. Your muscles, tendons, and joints need to get used to a combination of running, strength, and high intensity.

You don't need to do a full HYROX simulation every workout. Build up the load gradually, alternate intensive sessions with easier ones, and ensure sufficient recovery. This gives your body the chance to adapt and get used to the strain.

And listen to your body. Tired muscles after a tough workout are normal, but persistent pain is a different story. An extra rest day can sometimes be more beneficial than pushing through that planned workout at all costs.

Compression can be part of your training and recovery routine. It doesn't replace a proper training schedule, rest, or nutrition, but it can be a nice addition when you're looking for extra support during exercise or recovery.

Your first HYROX doesn't have to be perfect. You don't need to set the fastest time right away or do every workout with the heaviest weight.Train the combination, build up gradually, and discover what works best for you.

And who knows, you might find yourself thinking after that last kilometer: okay, when's the next one?
